Can the American Dream still be obtained?

What was once thought to be the "American Dream" could quite possibly be nothing more than either a nightmare or thorn in the side, or both these days. Did it ever exist? For many it did, but for others it was never achieved. Today it seems harder and harder to just put some sort of quality food on the table, let alone afford adequate living space.
